We are all thinking about it, might as well say it- Brit Awards 2021 has been a game-changer! Especially at these unprecedented times, where the world is fighting a global pandemic.
A live audience, no masks, and no social distancing was the nature of the award ceremony following the UK intervention into seeing how the country would go back to life before the pandemic. And so, with the pandemic fear ravaging the entire globe, Brit Awards chose hope and bravery.
The bravery brought together almost a 4,000 audience, who were ready to feel the air of this much-awaited event. The performances were electric. The show was hosted by Jack Whitehall who said on Twitter that it was so much of an honor for him to host the event the fourth time in a row.
The main questions, however, are; who won the awards? And for which categories? Well, let’s get to it, right now.
The best female solo award went to Dua Lipa, who won this for the second time now. There were of course other solo artists who
Dua Lipa also won the best Master Card Album, “future Nostalgic”. She emerged as one of the top winners having scooped two awards. And as an artist who advocates for the wave of women at the top in the music industry, she talked about what winning the awards meant to her as a female artist in her acceptance speeches. Arlo Parks scooped the Breakthrough artists award following her album, “Collapsed in Sunbeams”. Arlo’s award speaks a lot about what Brit awards stand for. That being commercially successful is not at the core of determining who is the best fit for an award and who isn’t. It is beyond doubt that Parks’ competitors who were nominated for the same award were commercially more successful than she was, but she still managed to win the award. It is a message to the world, that Brit admires and rewards quality music that inspires and influences more than it does commercially successful music.
The Weeknd, who performed “Save Your Lives” during the show, walked away with the international male solo artist awards, becoming the third Canadian artist to so winning the award. The previous Canadian winners of the award are Drake and Justin Bieber.
Billie Eilish won the international female solo artist of the year award for the second time in a row. A very competitive award taking in mind the nominees for the same award. Here is the list of the nominees.
Taylor Swift, however, won the global icon award becoming the first woman to ever win the award. This was therefore an ice breaker taking into account that she becomes the youngest artist to ever receive the awards and the first non-English as well. The other artists to have won the award are David Bowie and Elton John. The award recognizes artists who have made an impact all across the globe.
The British single award went to Harry Style’s “Watermelon Sugar”. This came as a huge win for Harry Styles given, he had also won a Grammy award for best pop solo performance for the same track. Harry Styles, in his acceptance speech, dedicated his award to the health workers who had put their life on the line during this global pandemic. It was indeed an emotional moment for the pop star.
The British Group award, on the other hand, went to Little Mix technically becoming the first girl group to ever win the award. It was clear from the start that the Brit Awards 2021 defied the odds of the pre-existing prepositions of gender discrimination in the industry. But it’s really not about gender, isn’t it? It’s about competence and making quality content that inspires. That is what it is about, and we believe Brit awards were convinced that Little Mix demonstrated and scooped the award, not because they were female but because they well deserved it. Some might of course disagree with the Brit awards’ decision on this and there is absolutely no problem with holding a different view.
